KPTL and Fundo Vale structure Forest and Climate Fund to invest R$200 million in impact companies in the bioeconomy

Venture capital firm KPTL is expanding its investment in innovation in the green economy and sustainability, in partnership with Fundo Vale, a business promotion and investment fund. The shareholders in their new fund, a pioneering initiative in the Brazilian venture capital world, include Tridon Participações and Denis and Ilana Minev, the owners of retail chain Bemol

Vale’s 2030 Forest Goal
69 Brazilian agroforestry businesses register for mapping exercise

Fundo Vale, in partnership with consulting firm Palladium, is mapping Brazilian agroforestry businesses. The selection process took place between April 11 and May 2, and 69 enterprises with positive social and environmental impacts registered. They are now being evaluated in terms of their potential to scale up, sustainable productive habitat restoration models, financial viability, potential to generate carbon credits and expansion.

Vale Fund creates the Carbon Hub for solutions with a positive impact

The Carbon Hub is a vehicle for the origination, development and management of carbon projects and environmental assets. Its purpose is to combine different strategies for developing its own projects, investing in new businesses and new technologies, and buying and selling carbon credits on the market, in line with Vale’s needs and the market’s context.

Applications open for Green Wave Connections program

The Green Wave Connection, a Climate Ventures program that promotes dialogue between startups and large companies or investment funds, is now accepting applications for up to 20 startups to receive mentoring and training. The most outstanding startup will win R$50,000.

Agroforestry Systems

Agroforestry systems are forms of land use or management in which tree species (fruit and/or timber) are combined with agricultural crops and/or animal husbandry, simultaneously or in a time sequence, yielding financial and ecological benefits. Agroforestry systems show that it is possible to associate the production of food and raw materials with the conservation of soil, water and biodiversity, besides helping reduce climate change. This type of system is a great option for recovering areas, as it accelerates ecosystem changes in comparison with natural succession.

Latimpacto holds first conference in Cartagena

Two years after the creation of the Latimpacto network, whose founding members include Fundo Vale, its first conference was held, between April 24 and 27. The in-person event took place in the historic city of Cartagena, Colombia, bringing together more than 350 participants from 25 countries, including representatives of impact funds, foundations, family offices and companies. The Brazilian delegation was one of the biggest, with more than 50 participants. Fundo Vale’s partnership leader, Márcia Soares, was one of the speakers.

Fundo Vale and Vale at Amazonian Leapfrogging event in United States

Between May 5 and 7, an event called “Amazonian Leapfrogging: Tackling the Climate Crisis and Social Inequality with Nature-Based Solutions” was held at Princeton University. It was attended by researchers, indigenous leaders and representatives of companies and civil society organizations, including Vale and Fundo Vale, who discussed challenges and opportunities regarding the Amazon’s conservation.

Fundo Vale contributes to University of Florida report

Fundo Vale’s team was invited to contribute an article to the 23rd edition of Latin American Business Environment, a report by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. The article shows how Fundo Vale has developed and is implementing strategies focused on social and environmental impacts to achieve Vale’s 2030 Forest Goal. It also emphasizes support for the development of businesses related to forests and climate.

Fundo Vale and ITV take part in seminar as part of “Fruturos – Amazon Times” exhibition at Museum of Tomorrow

In April, Hugo Barreto, the president of Fundo Vale, and Guilherme Oliveira, the manager of the Vale Institute of Technology (ITV), took part in a seminar called “Fruturos – The Amazon of Tomorrow.” The event was hosted by the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, as part of its temporary exhibition called “Fruturos – Amazon Times,” which will run until June 12. The exhibition is sponsored by the Vale Cultural Institute.

The documentary “Amazon: The Tipping Point” was produced by collaborative network MapBiomas Brasil and launched on YouTube in May. It shows Brazil’s importance in the context of global climate change and issues a warning about deforestation, which may be drying the Amazon and turning it into a ticking carbon bomb.

The second edition of Vale’s integrated annual report, related to the year 2021, presents the company’s main challenges and advances and it shares lessons learned from listening to various stakeholders. It encompasses natural products, probiotics, integral products, medicinal plant extracts and complementary treatments. Aimed at retailers and sector professionals, the trade show takes place in São Paulo and attracts players across an emerging market that is growing 4.4% per year on average. Brazil is the world’s fourth biggest market in terms of revenue.
