The documentary “Amazon: The Tipping Point” was produced by MapBiomas Brasil, a collaborative network of NGOs, universities and technology startups. It reveals transformations under way in Brazil. The video, launched on YouTube in May, shows Brazil’s importance in the context of global climate change and points out worrying signs that deforestation may be heating and drying the Amazon, turning its tropical rainforest into a ticking carbon bomb.
In 2021, a study found that in some locations, the Amazon is now emitting more carbon than it is absorbing. This situation will make the forest more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and, if a tipping point is reached, the biome that currently protects Brazil could pose a risk to the well-being of Brazilians, the domestic economy and the entire planet.
